Reddit, AI and the New Rules of Travel Discovery

Reddit is Now a Major Feeder for AI Discoverability

Travelers have more information at their fingertips than ever before.  But the bigger shift isn’t simply the amount of information available. It’s how travelers are finding it.  Increasingly, that’s through Reddit-fed AI tools.

Today’s traveler might discover a destination on Instagram, watch a creator’s video, search Google for things to do, read firsthand recommendations on Reddit and then ask an AI assistant to turn everything they’ve learned into a three-day itinerary.  Search, social media, creator content and artificial intelligence are increasingly overlapping.

For tourism marketers, that’s changing the definition of discoverability.  And Reddit offers one of the clearest examples of what’s happening.

How Reddit Leverages Authenticity as an AI Trust Signal

As Red Sage Director of Digital Services Kate West shared recently in an Alabama Mountain Lakes Tourist Association webinar, Reddit is built around communities organized by shared interests, locations and questions.  For travelers, that makes it particularly useful during the research and decision-making process.

People aren’t only scrolling Reddit for travel inspiration. They’re asking specific questions:

  • Is this destination worth visiting?
  • Where should I stay?
  • What should I do with kids?
  • Where do locals actually eat?
  • Which attraction is worth the money?
  • What should I know before I go?

These are valuable conversations because they reveal intent.

A traveler asking where to spend a long weekend isn’t simply consuming travel content. They’re actively evaluating options.  Reddit reports more than 15,000 travel-related communities, creating thousands of places where those conversations can occur.

For destination marketers, that creates both an audience opportunity and an intelligence opportunity.

The Traveler Journey Is Becoming an Information Ecosystem

We used to think about the visitor journey relatively linearly: awareness, consideration, planning and booking.  That journey is becoming much messier.  Travelers move constantly between search engines, social platforms, review sites, creators, destination websites and increasingly, AI assistants.

2026 travel research indicates that 54% of U.S. travelers have already used AI to help plan a trip, while 75% expect to use it on their next trip.  This creates what we think of as a super-empowered traveler: someone who can search, stream, scroll, shop and ask AI simultaneously.  That means tourism organizations need to stop thinking about these channels entirely in isolation.

A Reddit conversation can become a Google search result.  A traveler’s Google search can lead to Reddit.  And information published on Reddit can potentially become part of an AI-generated answer.

Discovery is becoming interconnected.

Reddit’s Growing Relationship With Search

One of the most significant developments for marketers is Reddit’s visibility outside Reddit itself.  Google reports that users clicked a Reddit result from Google 23 billion times globally during a one-year period.

Think about what that means for a destination.

Someone searching for the “best things to do in Huntsville with kids” might encounter:

  1. A destination website.
  2. A travel publication.
  3. A YouTube video.
  4. A Reddit thread.
  5. An AI-generated summary.

The destination doesn’t necessarily control all five.  But all five can influence the traveler’s perception.

That’s why modern SEO increasingly requires marketers to think beyond “Does our website rank?”

The better question is:  “What does a traveler discover when they search for us?”

Then AI Changes the Equation Again

Generative AI adds another layer because it can synthesize information from across the web rather than simply presenting a list of links.  That’s where Reddit becomes especially interesting.

Reddit contains enormous amounts of conversational, experience-based information: people asking questions and other people responding with opinions, recommendations and firsthand experiences.  As noted in Kate’s recent presentation, Reddit was the most frequently cited domain within one Semrush analysis of AI-generated responses, accounting for 40.1% of citations across the dataset studied. Results vary substantially by platform, query and research methodology, so that percentage shouldn’t be interpreted as a universal benchmark.

But the broader implication matters.  The conversations people have about your destination can potentially influence what AI systems understand—and ultimately communicate—about your destination.

That’s a significant shift.

This Is Where SEO Becomes GEO

Traditional SEO focuses heavily on helping search engines understand and rank your owned content.

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) expands that thinking to the information ecosystem AI systems use to understand an organization, destination or topic.  For tourism organizations, that means your website remains critically important—but it isn’t the only signal.

Your broader digital footprint matters too.

Reviews matter.

Creator content matters.

Third-party editorial coverage matters.

Social conversations matter.

And increasingly, platforms such as Reddit matter.

A strong GEO strategy therefore isn’t simply about creating content for AI. It’s about building a clear, credible and consistent body of information about your destination across the places where real people are already researching and discussing it.

So Should Tourism Organizations Start Posting on Reddit?

Not so fast.

Reddit is community-driven, and each subreddit develops its own rules, culture and expectations.

A brand entering those communities primarily to promote itself can quickly feel out of place.

The better starting point is listening.

  • What are travelers already asking about your destination?
  • What misconceptions keep appearing?
  • Which attractions receive unexpected recommendations?
  • What questions aren’t being answered well?
  • What competing destinations are travelers considering?
  • What words do actual visitors use when describing the experience?

Those conversations are valuable even if your organization never comments on a single Reddit thread.  They’re audience research, and this is where Red Sage often steps in alongside brands, to become an authority/conversation monitor, pulling actionable insights forward that inform how engagement should happen for real ROI.

Reddit Can Become a Content Intelligence Engine

This may ultimately be one of Reddit’s greatest opportunities for destination marketers.

Suppose travelers repeatedly ask:

“What are the best things to do in [destination] with kids?”

That isn’t merely a social media conversation.

It’s a signal.  Your destination might need a stronger family itinerary.

  • It could become an SEO opportunity.
  • It could inspire a short-form video.
  • It might become a paid-search landing page.
  • It could reveal information that needs to be clearer in your website FAQs.

And providing a strong authoritative answer on your own website may improve the information available to search engines and AI systems as well.  This is why we increasingly think about social listening, content strategy, SEO and GEO as connected disciplines rather than separate marketing activities.  Our agency has seen excellent early results for clients, by prioritizing both social-content that improves GEO, as well as foundational website edits and programming enhancements including deeper schema.

The Opportunity Isn’t to “Win Reddit”

There’s an important distinction here.  The strategic opportunity isn’t for every DMO, attraction or tourism organization to suddenly launch an aggressive Reddit publishing calendar.

It’s to understand the role Reddit plays in the larger discovery ecosystem.  For some organizations, that may mean monitoring conversations.  For others, it could mean identifying knowledgeable staff members, partners or community ambassadors who can authentically answer questions.

And for still others, it may include testing paid Reddit advertising alongside existing search and social campaigns.

Here’s how you can get started on your own with a small team, or a team of one:

  • Identify three to five relevant communities,
  • Establish a listening process
  • Identify two or three credible potential ambassadors and then expand participation based on what you learn.

People Are Becoming Part of the Search Strategy

There’s also a larger lesson here that extends well beyond Reddit:

People are increasingly part of your brand’s discoverability strategy.

Traditional destination marketing has understandably invested heavily in official brand channels.  But travelers often want something those channels can’t completely provide: the perspective of another human being.

A resident.

A visitor.

A restaurant owner.

An attraction employee.

Someone who has actually hiked the trail they’re asking about.

The strongest Reddit ambassadors aren’t people repeating approved brand messaging. They’re credible people who know something useful and are willing to share it.

That’s why Reddit rewards many of the same qualities that increasingly matter across modern digital marketing:

Experience. Expertise. Specificity. Authenticity. Helpfulness.

Those signals matter to humans first.

And increasingly, the digital systems helping humans make decisions are designed to find them too.

The New Definition of Destination Discoverability via Reddit and AI

For tourism marketers, the takeaway is bigger than Reddit.

The era when discoverability could be managed primarily through a destination website, traditional SEO and a handful of branded social accounts is changing.

Travelers now discover destinations through an interconnected network of:

Search + Social + Creators + Communities + Reviews + AI

Your owned website remains the foundation.

But your destination’s broader digital reputation increasingly helps shape what travelers—and the technologies assisting them—believe about you.

That’s why the next generation of tourism marketing strategy shouldn’t ask only:

“Where should we publish?”

We should also be asking:

“Where are travelers getting their answers—and are we giving the entire digital ecosystem the right information to answer them?”

Reddit is one important piece of that puzzle.

And as AI continues to reshape travel planning, understanding those connections will become increasingly important.  Reach out to our team for more guidance or a tailored strategy that advances your goals.
